I Am Almost Out of that Group

June 15, 2017

I was reading a newsletter from a coach I admire about her new group offering for mothers and I thought, oh, right . . . I am almost out of that group. Of course I will never officially be out of that group . . . what I mean is that my daughter no longer needs me the way she used to. My parenting life has shifted and there is a mixed bag of feelings that come along with knowing that.

Angie spent the bulk of her 10th grade year heavily involved in the theater. That was a major turn of events for the girl who had a clear vision of what her future looked like when she entered high school. I knew she would // will experience many changes on her path because been there, done that. When I explained this to her prior to starting high school, I was quickly shut down in a way only a 14 year old could shut a parent down. So I remained quiet and observant, offering advice only when asked.

It's been a combination of difficult, sweet, and surprising to watch her step into her own life as I step further away from it (mostly her choices & decision making process). She now has her learner's permit to drive (oh. my. God), she's got a part time job making her own money, and she just began touring colleges.

As one would imagine, this part of the journey where I have landed has opened up a lot of free time in my life. I remember when Ang was young how I would long for an hour to nap or clean the house. That changed to something easier, and then it changed again, and it kept changing until we ended up here and I know it'll change again, and again, and again.

I like where we are now.

I miss where we once were.

I can't wait to see where we'll go.
